In early 2020, Sydney’s pop-delight merci, mercy gave a first impression to beat them all on her irresistible debut, “Fucked Myself Up”. In this week’s Encore episode, merci, mercy performs her hit debut single, “Fucked Myself Up”.

With anthemic production and irresistible hooks, you might miss the difficult subject matter on first listen. But merci, mercy says honest songwriting is how she gets her emotions heard, even when it feels like people aren’t listening.

“Sometimes when you try and talk to people, they try to devalue what you have to say. [But] music can’t talk back to you,” she says.

Last year, merci, mercy joined an alumni of young artists that have released music, performed their first shows, and grown their fanbase from behind a screen, due to the pandemic. She openly describes her first in-person shows as feeling extremely awkward from her end.

“At one point I was like, “Everyone’s so bored”. But I don’t think they were bored. I think they were just watching me,” she realised.

In her performance on Mood on the Roof, you’ll see her show is anything but.
